Understand the Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) Calculator Formulas
The WHO formula uses a fixed value based on age and sex multiplied by weight. E.g.: Women (18-30 yrs): (14.818 x weight kg) + 486.6. Men (18-30 yrs): (15.057 x weight kg) + 692.2.
Harris-Benedict Formula
Uses height, weight, age, and sex. The version updated in 1984 by Roza and Shizgal provides more precise values.
Women: BMR = 655.1 + (9.563 × weight kg) + (1.850 × height cm) – (4.676 × age).
Men: BMR = 66.5 + (13.75 × weight kg) + (5.003 × height cm) – (6.75 × age).
Mifflin-St. Jeor Formula
Currently considered one of the most accurate methods for determining Basal Metabolic Rate in adults.
Women: BMR = 10 × weight (kg) + 6.25 × height (cm) – 5 × age (years) – 161.
Men: BMR = 10 × weight (kg) + 6.25 × height (cm) – 5 × age (years) + 5.
